Letter to the editor and report of speech by tho Minister of Labor are printed on first page of this issue.

Mr C. E. Major reports the sale of a quarter acre, with cottage thereon, in Camberwell Terrace, from MrT. Moriarty to Mr Geo. Newsham.

The photographs of the top of Mount Egmont, given by Mr C. W. Babbage to the Exhibition, bave a rather remarkable history attached to them. In order to get something ont of the ordinary in photography, Mr Babbage determined t6 make an ascent of tbe mountain, but the idea did notstrike him'until the beginning of May, rather late for an ascent. He went alone, and having obtained a number of pictures, after a good deal of delay owing to good opportunities being rare, he commenced the descent, but was overtaken by datknesß before he could make Dawson's Falis. For gome time he endeavored to get the camp, being reduced to tbe expedient of lighting matches to illu« miuate bis path, which, being over boulders ani at times on the edge of preoipioes, was not free Irom difficulty and danger. Alter several boms' effort Mr Babbnge was unable to discover familiar ground, and deemed it wise to move no fnrther. Therefore selecting the best shelter afforded by a tree he stood against it all night, afraid to lie down for fear of a rheumatio attack, and kept the circulation up by rubbing first one part of hie body and then another. A very long night ended at last, and to bis surprise daylight discovered to him nothing to indioate his position, but shortly be struck a stream and followed this dowD, having to wade it tor a considerable distance, and it proved to be one of the upper tributaries of the Kapuni On the previous afternoon he had been following the main stream of the Kapuni, but in the dark must bave crossed it at a point wbero it runs under ground, and for some hours bad been travelling from it before he decided to go no further. The experience was a rough and risky one, but Mr Babbage is none the worse for it ; and doubtless values the pictures for which hs endangered hia life. The pictures of the top of ths mountain, we may add, are remarkably good.
