WAITARA.

(FfiOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) I have had nothing good to chronicle lately from this end ; the wet and cold weather not being 'an interesting topic. The defeat of our football team by the Stars owing to the collapse of the Maori full-back in the last critica five minutes was a bitter pill for all of us to get down. We have reorganised the teavn and our men are training harder ttfan ever The Stars fully deserve 'any victory they get, as they are a light lot of men compared to most teams and they play a fair game on all occasions. We meet them here in six weeks time and jl great,/ struggle is sure to result. Yesterday, in spite of the tact that Her o Maj-esty > rained over us at intervals '(oh! forgive the venerable joke) Clifton Rovers jgave Lepperton Stragglers a big defeat of ten to nil. When the Bovers and Tukopas meet then comes the tug-of-war. In spite of the temporary closing of the freezing wprke there are still no houses vacant here, but on the contrary two are going up, the owners, Messrs Wickam and A. F. Dugdale, being their own architects and builders. A man must be able to turn his hand to many different occupations if he would make a living here now-a-days. Our local chess club can boast of two strong players, Messrs Gourlev and Lennan to wit, I should much like to see a correspondence match with Manaia, wlio, we understand, are a strong club A fortnightly dance in the town hall has been arranged for, and what with that and- Guild our young people should be fairly well off for amusements this winter. At the Harbor Board election out of 84 votes cast here 83 were in favor of Mr Maxwell. Evidently we all thought New Plymouth were too well represented already.-- May 25.
