In our first edition on Saturday the para> graph re cattle-stealing charges stated that tbe information had been sworn against "Arthur" Toting. Campbell to operate on. Tbe animal was a very spirited one, but was soon under command | co that anything could be done with him. Very general surprise was expressed (a Manaia correspondent writes) at the rentals tendered for the native leases, which were published in your issue of Saturday last. It is freely asserted that the lucky (?) tenderers will be forced to apply for redactions before their tenancy has run very long, as previous leaseholders had to do. Mr T. W. Frethey has just started on a trip to Chicago and the Old Country. The partnership known as Fretbey Bros, has reoently been disolved. Mr John has entered into a moreinteresting partnership, whilßt Fred is doing what we consider the next best in taking a trip abroad. The home of Frethey Bros, has long been known for its free and oDen • banded hospitality to all comers. It is said that tbere is trouble at WaDganui about an Opposition candidate, I owing to some of the extreme temperance party insisting on running Mr Carson, who is absent from tbe colooy just now. A publicly-convened meeting is to be held this week. Ia tbe B.M. Court at Maeterton, Peter Mortenson reoovered fror* Jacob Hebberley money lost in gambling with dice. The case was brought under an English statute iti force in the Colony, in which power is given to recover moneys lost at gambling witb dice or cards, providing tbe sum exceed £10. The programme for the military toarnament under tbe auspices of the Hawera Mounted Rifles, to be held on Qaeen's Birthday, appears in another column. Referring to tbe death of Mr. William Mountfort Barton, who died at Okaiawa on Thursday, the Taranaki Herald says : — Mr. Burton was closely conneoted with the early history of Taranaki. He was a member of the Provincial Council, and held various appointments. He materially assisted the settlement of this province in tbe capacity of immigration agent. Some five years ago Mr. Burton left this part of the district, and took up bis residence at Okaiawa. Mr A. A. Fantham bas received the following letter from Mr A. Vecht, who is still in Wellington : — According to my promise I inform yon herewith that my trial shipment of New Zealand mild cured mesa pork arrived in Europe and gave great satisfaction, We may, tberelore, say that this business will be establised here, and that the farmers can reckon to bave a ready market for pigs weighing from 180 to 160 nett ail the year round. You may preliminarily inform yonr friends of this, and I intend shortly to come to Hawera to meet the farmers of your association. Another instance of the inconvenience arising from the duplications of postal towns came before us this morning. An order from Pahiatua addressed to "Hawera" for a Supply of timber was reoeived by a resident here, and as be is very much out of the timber line tbe request puzzled him greatly. No doubt it was intended for a miller at the other Hawera, and as the order was apparently wanted with hot baste no doubt tbe sender and the addressee are by this time at loggerheads. The Postal Department ought really to take action in the matter of changing the name of tbe township in the Forty Mile Bnsb.
