THE INGAHAPE BRIDGE.
The Patea Press reports that at the last meeting of the»,Batea W,est Road Board " the Hawera County Council wrote jnformiog the Board that tbe Council was aboqfc to re- erect tbe Jngabape bridge, and would call on the Board for half the cost ofeime." Mr Sprues moved, " Thatt , in reply to thejetter from the Hawera County Council re bridge over Ingahape stream, the Council be informed that this Board dops not admit of any right or claim to maintenance of either the roadway or bridge ; and as this Board considers that neither are of any use to this districu thfi Board declines to assist in the cost of re-erection of the bridge." Seoonded by Mr Pearco anrl carried. This is a somewhat extraordinary position for the Boad Board to take up, and if its decision be unassailable it will result either in great inconvenience to the Whakamara and Manutabi settlers, or injustice to the Mokoia ridiDg of the Hawera County. But we presume that the Road Board cannot evade responsibility in this way, /or as tbe bridge crosses the bonndary stream it seems probable that nilly-wiliy ] the Board must pay its share. However, i that is a matter which will have to be ' considered by tbe County Council at its ■ meeting on Friday. '
