Up till late yesterday evening there was no trace found of the missing man Mr W. Sutton, of Otakeho.

We understand the Stratford people are petitioning the "Minister of Justice for the creation of the new district court area, having its head-quarters at Stratford.

Mr Marchant, as ranger to the Education Reserves Commissioners, is on a tour of inspection of the education reserves in tbe Waimate district.

Mr Hine, of the Tikorangi Factory, is, we hear, going Homo to try to establish a direct trade with the provincial towns for this successful co-operative venture.

Misses C. Dixon, M. Clemoe, and A. Martin were the successful competitors for the watch-guessing prize in conneotion with the fire brigade sports. The watoh will be sold, and the proceeds divided.

We hear rumours of extensive sheep

Mr Henderson, saddler, left Manaia yesterday for "Wellington, where "he has obtained a satisfactory engagement with his old employer. He takes the rifle cup with him, which he won on Good Friday. Mrs Craig (Otakeho) met with a painful and peculiar accident yesterday. She had her hand on the top of the pump against the piston rod, when one of the children suddenly jerked up the handle, forcing her finger into the pump, and jamming it with the rod. There she had to remain fastened by the finger until a neighbour hearing her cnea came to her assistance. The rod had to be bent before she could get her finger out, which was terribly bruised.

A rather unusual case was beard at Ashbnrton the other day. John Grigg (Longbeach) sued Robt. Torpin (Napier) for £78 15s 7a. The plaintiff alleged that tbe defendant contracted to scour, dry, sort aod pack plaintiff's wool, but so negligently and unskilfully perlar-ajed tbe Baid work that the woo' became depreciated in value and also had to be unpacked, dried and re-packed. The evidence showed that after part of the wool had been despatched to the ship, two bales, left in th,e woolsbed, were found heated, owing tp being packed damp. Thirty-two bales at Lyttelton were then examined by a wool scourer and found to be damp and heated and also badly scoured and washed. The expert evidence was that the wool had been depreciated in value turee halfpence to twopence per pound, through bad scouring and discolouration ; tbat the wool was Loo hot to hold one's haod io. Mr Grigg did not press for the lull amourft of the claim, and judgment was given for £48 8s and coats.

The Waimate Football Club's annual meeting will be held at the Manaia Hotel this evening.

Last evening a number of friends of Mr. A. Matheson met at the Egmont Hotel to make him a presentation prior to his departure from Hawera. His Worship the Mayor presided. The presentation took the form of an ebony walking stick with a silver top, bearing Mr. Matheaon's name, and a gold band containing a suitable inscription. Mr. Major, in making the presentation, spoke highly of Mr. Matbeson's services to the canse of football in bis capacities of secretary to the Hawera Football Club and to the Taranaki Rugby Football Union, and said tbat be bad raade many frieods in Hawera, who would regret hiß departure. Mr Matkeson stated tbat anything he had done in football matters he had done for the love of tbe game, and he had always tried to do his best. He was surprised at receiving the present, which he would value highly. The toast of Mr Matbeson's health was then drunk, and a pleasant evening was spent, several of those present contributing Bongs and recitations. Mr Matheson leaves on Tuesday for Palmerston North.
