SECOND BOUND. In the second round the same order will be maintained, but the places reversed ; matches to be played weekly.

(Tackler.) Tbe scratch match played on Saturday was not a very brilliant exposition of the game, comparatively,, few old players participating.' Several of "'-the contestants showed a very crudeknowledga of the rules. Lucena played a good game, as also did Livingston, Sbepard, the two .Buchanans, Boyd, Holmwood, and J. Winks. The latter was continually on the ball, and seemed never to flag. The ground wat> in perfect condition, and tbe day a splendid one ; and I was sorry to see such a poor turnout.

There is one matter which I should like to urge upon the captain, and that is that he should enforce more discipline on the field. On Saturday, several players .appeared to treat the game as( a tinge joke, and a Continuous round of talk was indulged in between, them and some of the spectators. Saoh remarks from "players" as "Hereto a 'dead snip' !" and (to an opponent) " You're a •dandy,' 'Major'!" are no doubt calculated to cause laughter; but »are a decided deterrent to good play. It men .want to play they should enter seriously into tbe game, and-not raa_ke a laughingstock of it,, besides, wasting the time of players who have the* merest of the club at heart and are anxious to put in good work. My remarks apply' more particularly to several strangers who ) " assisted " in the game.

The decision of the Taranaki Rugby Football) Union whereby all clubs north of Stratford form. the Northern, and all south form the Soutberii'.division of the Union, each division to p'lafy two rounds, and the two winning teams to play off; for premiership, should find favor with 3 players. There can be no doubt tbaf the district is too large ; and tbe expense of travelling to lalfil Oup engagements has been a heavy item to members of teams in the paat. The innovation has also bad the effect of induoing Patea td join the Union.

I notice that our dusky brethren have determined to go for the trophy this season, and have accordingly joined tbe Union. Taiporohenui ia the name of tbe new Club.

Tbe match at Gbriatchnrph between Merivale and Melrose was won easily by Merivale, whose backs , wertf all too clever for the visitors. Scores, 33 points to nil (five goals, one potted goal and two tries). White scored three tries, P. Menzies two tries ; Lang, a potted goal and a try; Cook, one try; and Cook converted five tries into goals. The meeting of the Clifton Bovers (juniors) took place on April Ist. There was a large attendance of members. It was decided that the name of tbe Club remain Clifton Bovers, and that they remain a separate club; The following officers were elected :— President, Mr s! Whitehead ; vice-president, Mr P. Dover; Captain, Mr. G. Oxenham ; deputy-capt., Mr J. Purdie; Hon. Sec, Mr J. Purdie; Match Committee, Messrs S. Whitebead, P. Dover, Captain and Secretary. Mr J. Purdie was named as delegate to the Junior Rugby Union. Sixteen new members joined the club, making 35 members ; and it was deoided to go into active training at once. A very good workiog team sbould be turned out this season, as all are keen on the game. Robinson* waß present at the game on Saturday last, but refrained from playing owing to an injury to his leg. After tbe game he indulged in a bit of kicking, and proved himself able to propel the leather with force and accuracy.

It is stated that the Zingari-Biohmond Club, Dunedin, have secared the services of f a Sarrey footballer, who played for his county against the New Zealand Natives when the latter wont to England.

The cup.won by the Clifton Club, and presented to Mr. B. Tate, is having a suitable inscription engraved upon &< shield, and will shortly be given that gentleman as a mark of gratitude for services rendered to football in this district for many years past.

The annual match between teams representing the East Christcburch and Poneke Oiubs took place at Petone, Wellington, on Saturday, and endjsj in a draw, each side scoring five poinfcp (a goal from a try). The match was a great disappointment. What with the short spells, the frequent (stoppages while the ground waß being cleared, or while an injured player* was being attended to, there scarcely eeemed to be any play at all. and what little there was, was for the most part dull, uninteresting. In short, the match as an exposition of the advanced game of football such as might reasonably be expected from twQteamßwithßuch great reputations, was a dismal failure. There waa little or no combination on either aide, and very little passing. Some excuse, however, must be made for the players, who cannot be expected to be seen at anything like their beßfc so early in the season. They were very mnoh out of form, with one or two exoeptions, and they bad not had the advantage of playing together. lq the first spell the play was ahout even, but in the second the visitors had'a good deal the best of it, and tbe Ponekes- were frequently on the defensive. * '

The aonnal general meeting of the Clifton Football Olnb w*B held on March 30th. There waga fall attendance. The balance-sheet snowed £5 Ba ' to **redit. Mr. T. Elliot was unanimously elected president; and, after a ballot, Messrs, B. Cameron, James Sarfcen, and H. Florey, jon., were eleoted vice-presidents. Mr. R.. Tate was unanimously elected captain, Mr. W. Jonas deputy, and Mr. H. Spnrdle secretary and treasurer. Messrs. W. Wells, J. Lye, and W. Jonas (with captain and secretary) were appointed a match committee. The following new members were eleoted {—Arthur Jonas, H. Pardie, J. Telfar, E. Petherix, H. . Barwell, G. Francis, Book Bessinger. A. Faall.

Bradford ia the riohegt oJob in England, having do less than £10,000 in hand, in addition to wbioh they oiaim to have the stronj?eßt Rnjtby football fifteen of any olnb in Great Britain. , ;^- At a meeting of the Canterbury Bngßy Union, the ohairman made some remarks

anent the s pUying of matches on*Eftnc»Bter Park. Ha observed that goojslhterprovmoial football could not be gaictati if only fine-weather football was eraaged in. - His personal opinion was thtt^Uwt season there were* times when matches were not played on tbe Park when they could bftve been, and he felt chat their defeat by Wellington was largely due to their want of experience of bad grounds. If Canter, bury wanted to win interproyincial matches her.representatives-muat be, able to play well on both good and bad groundp. He moved—" That it.beareqommenda. tion to the ground committee to not postt •pone any matches unless "the grounds or weather or both were extremely bad." At the Annual general meeting of the Manganm /Football Olnb; the name of the clab waß changed from tbe Maneanni clnb to the Stratford olttb. tfbVcaptain reportedl that he attended the annual meeting of the RugbyU«nn.
