The number in oamp did not reach expectations, m it was estimated there would be about' " 250 jnen unde^ canvas; Captain Coleman, Qbveibment drill instructor, was in foffitnanJoftbooamp. The troops were inspeoted by Colonel Fox on May' The Hawera troop more than held its own, which iB greatly to its oredit, as it fa one of the youngest corps in die semoe. It furnished the Regt. Serjrt'Major (Troct) and Bugle-Major (W. * Byrne), for the encampment. The corps ynt specially complimented for its wheel* ing, and for its rapidity in mounting add dismounting for skirmishing; also for itß knowledge of guard duties, and Captain Coleman gave us the oredit of having the cleanest lines in the squadron. The horses of all the different corps were , * fine lot of animals. The camp broke up on Monday night, tnd on Tnesday morning a friendly shoot* ing match was arranged betweep the Hawera and Manawatu Mounted Rifles, Which resulted in a win tor Hawera by 68 points. The ranges were 200 and 800 yardß. Following are the scores :— Hawera.— Trp. 0. Baker, 49 ; Tro. R. Hioks, 47; Trp. F. Baker, 48; Oaptain Johnston, 89 \ Oorpl. Linn, 89 ; Sergt.- ; Major Trott, 35; Sergt. Lnoena,' 22. Total, Lieut. Pringle, 42; Trp. Browning, 89 ; Trp. Pearson, 87 ; Sergt. Balmon, 85; Lieut. Ingley, 27; Sergt. Munto, 22; Gorpl. Wallace., 14. Total, 179.

The Hawera contingent left for Ijome on Tuesday night, atrivint? here at 5 : o'block this (Wednesday) moraing. The mods. of conveyanoe pxovide& lot the " troop by the EaiJ way Department deserves Mveto censure, Jjeing opeu ttuokß ; and even these were few in number. The men were packed like Bardineß for eight hotuca. The weather, hoth going and relarning, wag bitterly cold. This is certainly not the way to encourage voluntters to muster well; and if, better aoeommodation be not offered next year, I ' -am afraid the cavalry encampment will be a failure.
