Bazaar in Aid of Roman Catholic Church, Manaia.

For some months past the ladies of the Roman Oatholio congregation, Manaia. have been basy in Retting Roods made and proooriDg donations for holding a monster bazaar to raise funds to complete the oharoh building. It was decided to have two stalls, Mrs. Green undertaking to procure subscriptions for one, and Mrs. Huflhea the other. Yesterday was fixed as the opening day, and everyone con* neoted witb the undertaking was basy at work from early morn, assisting to put things in order, Messrs. Robinson Bros, and Mr. George Manser, of Hawera, landing great assistance in the erection of stalls, &o. The hall was tastefully decorated with feme, flags, and Chinese lanterns. In the centre of tbe 'hall a oouple ot tree-ferns, implanted in large tubs, bad a very pretty effect. Shortly after the time appointed for opening, Mr. J. Milroy, chairman of the Town Board, who had courteously consented to open the bazaar, said ho had a pleasant duty to perform, at the request of the Rev. Father Mulvihill, wbich was to deolare the bazaar open to the public. The purpose for which it was held was to raise lands to improve the ohuroh and make it more suitable for holding worship in than it had been in the past. He hoped the prooeeds of all the valuable and handsome goods wbioh were displayed on the stalls would be sufficient for the intended purpose, and when the interior was complete, so chat it would be in keeping with the exterior, tbe bnilding would be an ornament to tbe township. Speoial thanks were due to tbe ladies who bad worked so assiduously in getting the goods together, Wbioh formed the grand display on the stalls, and the greatest compliment those who sympathised with them could pay would be to roll up and buy the goods, which would give more satisfaction than mere thanks in word?. He would there* fore deolare the bazaar of 1893 now open to the public, and hoped the results would far exceed the expectations of its most ardent promoters. (Applause). The Rev. Fatber MulvihiU thanked Mr. Milroy for his assistance. It is a very easj thing to go and look at tbe hundred and one things which the industry and ingenuity of a number of zealoas ladies can accumulate, but to oommit a description of them to paper is a very different thing altogetber. When you, come to look on all. tbe iuMjsome things arrayed in their most attractive style yon feel at » loi3 where to begin. On

Within a short time ot the opening the J hall was crowded, and all the assntantf f were fully occupied in disposing of goods, getting up raffles, and carryin* out the other many ways which are practised at saoh gatherings for the extraction of tbt coin of the realm from visitors. Not least amongst these devioes was the bran padding. A large zinc bath was filled with bran, and a nnmber of artioies of all descriptions buried in this.
