Tbere were a number of very good speeches delivered during the evening on the total prohibition sideof tbt question, whilst other propositions found no warm supporters, so tbat at the close of tbe discussion, and when it was put to thi vote, total prohibition won by a large majority. The business brought before the League was a letter which it was pro* posed to write to the New Zealand Alliance on behalf of Mr. E. Tennyson Smith, testifying to the good tbat be lias done in the colony, and Hawera in particular, and suggesting to tbe Alliance tbe desirability of tbeir taking, him up, and in tbe event of their consenting to do so, the Prohibition League would promise the Alliance their full support. Tbft letter was well received, and was signed by twenty-fire persons, in addition to the t president and secretary. Mr. B.
