NEWS AND NOTES. There was a remarkably heavy fog on the Plains last night. An earthquake oocurred shortly after two o'clock this morning. Heavy rain is falling between Anckland and Oxford. Another Waikato flood is threatened, and there is apprehension of damage. At the Hnnterville sports on Wednesday, I. Watts won the 440 yards with 17 yards start ; and with the same allowance Fred Meredith annexed the Ladies' Bracelet (220 yds). In another column Eev. Father Mulvihill thanks Mr. Winks for the use of his paddock last Tuesday, and all who contributed, assisted and patronised the picnic. The Eev. W. J.
