Fraternite bas been scratched for the Egmont Handicap. The Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. J, Bellringer) was in Hawera oq Tueeday. It is reported in the Marton Mercury that Bishop Hadfield, of Wellington, has purchased the residence in Marton formerly occupied by Mr. J. L. Kirkbride, and that he will take possession early in May. We would remind employers who come under the working of the Factories Act that the time for registering factories was January Ist. Very few have co far attended to this matter, and those who j have not yet done so should see to it at onoe. Our Normanby correspondent writes ; — The lecture given by Mr. Lytken was fairly attended, Mr. J. Wileon acting as chairman, and those present evidently enjoyed the leotnre, as the second part is to be given on Wednesday eveoing next ; some of the gentlemen in the room guaranteeing £& for the house. At Mr. Yorke's sale of purebred stud Bomney ewes and rams at Hawera last week, the majority of tbe ewes were purchased by Mr. David Buick, of Rangitikei Line. Mr. Bnick also parchased the Bomney ram wbich took first prize at the last Egmont A. and P. Show. Tbe stock (says the Manawatu Standard), which are in good condition, and are looking really well, arrived at Palmerston by train on Tuesday evening last. Mr. Yorke, it may be mentioned, obtained the special prize offered by Mr. Buchanan at the Manawatu Show of 1891 for tbe best hogget's wool, and cbe flock make a valuable addition to the etud sheep of tbe district.

An Auckland contemporary relates a desperate encounter between a dog and a shark in the harbor, ofl the Hobson street wharf. Tbe dog, which was swimming about, oa'tobing a stiok whiob its master threw into tbe water, was attaoked by a email shark. The fish turned to bite, wben tbe dog gave a sadden bound and gripped the shark immediately behind tbe head. Suddenly they both disappeared, bnt in a few seconds tbe dog came to the surface with a large piece of tbe shark in its mouth. This infariated the fish to such a degree that, lashing the water furiously, it again attacked tbe dog, bat the latter caught it by the upper part of the head and tore the skin away bit by bit until the Bbark beoame completely exhausted, and was captured by those on shore.

There seems to be a great scarcity, says the Hastings correspondent of tbe Hawke's Bay Advertiser, of good sound apples in tbe district this year, and the price no doubt will be prohibitive before the season is over. I have examined several of the orchards lately, and conld scarcely believe it possible tbat tbe moth would be so bad. It is high time the Government did something to compel growers to do one of two things — either destroy tbe trees they have, or pay more attention to them. As it is at present, you will find Mr. Jones, who has a little fruit shop of bis own, doing all in his power to keep bis garden clean, while his neighbor, Mr. Smith, sits quietly by, Rmoking bis pipe, and allows tbe scourge to take its fling, to bis own detriment and that of his neighbor.
