CHRISTCHURCH. January 30.
An elderly man named Jameß O'Brien , chimney Bweep, shot himself in the head with an old pistol, loaded witb shot. At present he is progressing favorably, bnt it iB not known whether the wound will prove fatal. He bad been drinking for a week past.
DUNEDIN, January 30.
The experiment of giving an open air performance of tbe Messiah was tried to day on tbe Caledonian Ground, and proved euocessful. The weather was dull but fine, and not a breath of wind was stirring. Tbe chorus and orchestra, numbering over 3000, and including the Governor and Lady Glasgow and suite, were on tbe ground below. Only the ohoruees were given. At the conclusion Sigoor Squarise, who conducted, waß presented to and congratulated by His Excellency. The performance was in aid of Miss Keating, who had lost both her eyes by being accidentally shot just before Christmas. After the Messiah performance the Governor inspected the local Volunteers, who mustered well.
