(FBOM OUR OWN GOEEESPONDENT.") The ordinary monthly meeting of:the; council was held 'on the 25th inet. Present:—Messrs. Monkhouse (obairmt>n), Thomson, Beid, Stead, Balfe, Irvine, Mehaffy. CLIMIE ROAD. Messrs Blair, Fryday, and Wisneweki waited on the council to ask for a bridge or concrete culvert over the Ciimiestream, the original one having collapsed. They explained that the loan proposal had fallen through, and they had no outlet in the present position of affairs. The counoil, while sympathising, was unabie to do anything withont a loan. ARIEL STREET. Mr. Luek waited on the counoil on the Btibjeu of closing the above street in Stratford township. It was resolved to confirm the deoision of ratepayers that the street should be closed. Two amendments were proposed —one a direofc negative by Mr. Mehaffy, which was ruled out of order, and the other that the confirmation be held over for a month. Ayes—lrvine, Mebaffy, ani Thomson. Noes—Tooker, Brown, Stead, Balfe, and Beid. SLAUGHTER LICENSES. Benewals were granted to Messrs. Worthington and Ho war to. DOG LICENSE. E&The fee was fixed at 2s 6d for cattle dogs and 10b for all others, the Council office to be the place for registration, the olerk to be the registrar, and tenders to be invited from the local saddlere for ■apply of collars. DANGEROUS. It was determined to advertise Climie toad ae stopped for traffio at Olimie stream, and to pose notioe to that effect at each end of road. (Thomson —Monkhouee.) TOKO ROAD. Messrs. Aiken, A. Bayly, and H. J. Coutts waited on the Oouncil on the matter of re-definition of the area to be benefited by the proposed loan work. Mr. Coutts objected to two-thirds of bis land being included in the area. The motion of December 16th,- resolving to borrow i>2ooo and defining the special area, was rescinded. (Monkhouse —Thomson.) Proposed by Mr. Monkbouse, seconded by Mr. Thomson, That a £2000 loan be raised for Toko road on the seourity of the special area formerly defined, but excluding 700 acres of Mr. Coutts , land and 286 acres of Mr. H. Bayly's. Amendment by Mr. Mehaffy, seconded by Mr. Irvine, That part of the Matemateaonga block be included in the special area. Loet on division. Ayes—lrvine, Tooker, Brown, Mehaffy. Noes—Balfe, Beid, Stead, Thomson, Monkhouse. Original motion carried. DEVIATION. Mr. A. Miohali, who has taken from Government a contract to raise East road at the bad bog hole this side of Toko, is desirous of being allowed to deviate on to Mr. Aiken's land, and waited on the council to ask for its support and influence in the matter. Besolved, That the Government be respectfully asked to consider the advisability of deviating East road at Standish load, and that they be informed that the council is of opinion that the deviation is most desirable, having in view the difficulty of metalling the road before winter. (Irvine—Tooker.) CHEAL ROAD. Besolved, That a loan of £1200 be raised, the seotions abutting on the road to be the special area. (Thomson —Balfe.) WAWIEI-MAKUEI ROADS. Besolved, That a loan of £2800 bo raised, the sections shown on plan B to be the speoial area. (Irvine —Tocker.) CSAIBHAN'S EXPENSES. On the motion ol Mr. Mehaffy, seconded by Mr. Tocker, it was determined to pay the chairman an allowance of £2 10s per month for travelling expenses within the county. NOT CARRIED. Proposed by Mr. Mehaffy, eeoonded by Mr. Tooker, That owing to the financial position of the county, other councillors be not paid travelling expenses. Ayes— Irvine, Tooker, and Mehaffy; noes—Balfe, Brown, Beid, Stead, Thomson, and Monkhouse. TENDERS. S Fenders were accepted as follows:— wan Boad, ditching—Greig and Brooking, 2s per chain for oleaning old ditohes, 20s for new, 40s for culvert. Skinner Boad—W. Mapp, £170 19s Bd. Bird Boad (below Skinner Boad) —W. Mapp, £157 Bs. Toko Boad bridge— J. A. Niool, £145. Tenders were declined for Sole, Cornwall, and Cardiff-Waingongoro roads, and it was resolved to advertise them afresh. SETTLEMENT OF ACCOUNTS. Mr. Stead reported as to statement of accounts between the counoil and the Manganui Boad Board, and it was resolved to remind the board of its undertaking to pay the counoil £37 8s Id, and to ask it to hand over cheque. EXTRAS. Messrs. Coupe's claim was not entertained. APPROACH TO SHOP. Mr. Petersen to be informed that the counoil has no funds for the work. FENCE DAMAGED. Mr. Saywell's application referred to engineer. EAST ROAD. The engineer was instructed to make the approaoh to the bridge over the Toko stream, and to report as to condition of ttie road. NOT SATISFACTORY. The ohairman reported that Brough's

stone-crnshing plant was not working satisfactorily. WARWICK BOAD. Engineer to report on work asked for by Mr. Forniss. watkin's hill. Messrs. Perm, by their solicitor, wrote to say that they intended to claim com* pensation for the serious damage caused to their property by the grading of Monntain road through the township, bnt that they did not wish to take legal proceedings if the matter could be settled by arbitration. It was resolved to ask the county solicitor to attend a special meeting of the Council to disouss the question of liability.
