FATAL DRAG ACCIDENT.
A WOMAN T?n>.T,T?/n AND SEVEBAL
INJURED.

DUNEDIN, January 29.
A fatal accident oocurred on the steep road leading from Mornington. to Kai. korai Valley shortly after 11 o'clock this morning. A drag oontainiog 15 young people, 10 of whom were women, was being driven by W. Oaeey. At the top of the hill the brake failed to act, and the dragt pressing on the horses, caused them to bolt for over half a mile at a great pace. The vehicle swayed from side to •ide of the road, and in its coarse all but three of the occupant! were thrown or jumped out. Mary Cpnnelly fell on her nead, causing fracture, of the skull and dislocation of the spjne, whioh resulted in almost instantaneous death. Mary Walsh sustained a severe scalp wound and a shock, Margaret <Wa!sh a sprain to j the spine, Mary Williams a fracture of the spine, and Casey a badly sprained knee. The other oooupants of the trap were shaken and brnised badly but not otherwise injured. Mr William Mearns, of tbe St. John's Ambulance Association, vas tbe first to render surgical aid, and was complimented upon its efficiency by Dr. A. J. Ferguson, who subsequently attended the injared.
