WHAKAMARA.
(FROM OUR OWN COBRESPONDENT.} A letter was received here last week from Bev. Mr. Clarke, of Patea, an extract of which will show how matters stand in regard to church services:—•• Eev. W. H. Kay's district has lately been divided so tbat in future he will take my place at Whakamara. lam very sorry to give, up Wbakamara, but am consoled in knowing that Mr. Kay will most faithfully preaoh the truths whiob are so dear to me, and tbat his ministry will under God be blessed." In accordance with the above; I understand tbat Mr. Kay preaches here on Sunday, the 29th inst. ' Last week a three-year-old cbild of Mr. Illston's fell from a rail, and had the misfortune to break his leg at the thigh. Dr. Westenra, who attended and set the bone, had some difficulty in finding the place in dark, which delayed the operation for a few boors, bat I hear the boy is progressing favorably. Mr. Martin from Patea visited the district again on Sunday the 22nd, and as on a former occasion, did not let tbe people know of bis coming; tbe consequence was that on sending to the chairman of the school committee for tbe key it was not forthcoming owing to his being away from home, but nothing daunted, service was conducted in tbe poroh of tbe school. Oar school opened on Tuesday the 24tb after the holidays, and, so far, the attendance has been very bad. I suppose the quantity of outdoor work at tbfs season of the year being the cause, and tbe late wet weather keeping things baok that everyone available is required to make up lost time. The contract for the Noonan bridge has been let for some months now, and, as yet, there is no appearance of a start to tbe work. It is to be hoped tbat it will be commenced soon, so as to allow the earth fillings to get settled before tbe winter sets in. January 28.
