WELLINGTON, January 27.

Tbe stewards of the Wellington Raoing Club demanded from tbe trainer of Dream* land, the winner of tho last race yesterday, an explanation of ber reversal of form on the previous day. Maher attributed the nonsuocees of tbe mare on tbe first day to fraotiousness, and said she finished well up. The stewards deoided to take no action.

WELLINGTON, January 28.

The Government have deoided to invite tenders for the erection of a railway station at Mangabaone, nine miles beyond Hunterville. When this is completed, which is expected to be about two months' time, the line will be opened.

A boy named Stewart Kelly fell into the dam near the patent slip, and was drowned. His brother went in after him and got him to the bank, bnt was unable to bold him up till assistance came.

CHRISTOHUROH, January 26.

A telegram reached the Cbristchuroh police, on Wednesday, stating that a man named Witbell. employed as a grass-seeder at the Peninsula, left his mates at two o'olook yesterday afternoon to fetch some water from a creek a few yards from where they were living. Ho did not return, and searob was made, bnt no tidings were beard of Mb whereabouts. It is feared that the man, while Buffering from sunstroke, fell into one of the gullies in the vicinity. Another search party has been sent out.
