WELLINGTON, January 14. A remarkable defence was set up in a charge against the licensee of the Bank Hotel of keeping a barmaid in the bar at 12.45 a.m. on Xmas Day. The Act says employees mu6t not be Kept in bar more thaa ten hours, and not after 11 p.m. The defence was that the employment could begin the moment after midnight so long as she w&b not kept more tban tbe ten hours, and tbe B.M. upheld contention. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 14. The Hinemoa arrived from Manukau this morning and took the dredge Progress in tow for Oamaru. BLUFF, January 13. Tbe barque Examiner, Captain Pallant, bound |0 Clarence riverfromDunedin, with ironbark timber, arrived here last nigbt disabled, having bad her rudder knocked off through touching tbe rocks at 11.30 on Tuesday nigbt at Waggy Island, southwest of Stewart's Island. Foggy weather prevailed at tbe time, and bad tbe fog not lifted, disclosing the vessel's position, a total loss would have resulted. Fortunately, a breeze off the shore enabled tbe vessel to obtain an offing. Temporary steering gear was rigged, enabling her to make tbe Straits yesterday.
