At the Monetary Conference, Rothschild proposes that; tbe European Powers should combine to purchase yearly, for five yeßra, five million pounds' worth of silver, at a price not exceeding 3s 7d per oz ; and in r fhe event of the price rising higher, the j purchases should instantly cease. v A man named Pender, arrested on a gjbarge of stabbing his wife, and subsequently admitted to bail, followed her to Rutherglen, entered the house, and shot her and a man named Hourigan. Both victims were dangerously wounded, but effected their escape. Pender removed the children, and then set fire to the bouse. He has since b9en arrested. Domestic infelicity is said to be the cause of the trouble.
Last year's operations at the Mint resulted in a loss of £40,000.
The Metropolitan Board of Works has authorised modifications in the Manßergh sewerage scheme for the city. The coat will be 3£ million pounds, as against five millions under the original scheme.
The next intercolonial postal conference will be held in Brisbane in March.
