The Attack on Mr. Kirkbride.

AN ARREST MADE.

(PER UNITED PRKSS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, December 1. Albert Thomas, aged about 28 years, French polisher by trade, was arrested last night by Detective Campbell, on a charge of having attempted to murder Mr. J. L. Kirkbride. Daring the day the hammer found on the verandah was identified by three or four people, who said they had seen it in use, and after further inquiries had been made by tbe police Thomas was apprehended. Evidenco will be called to show that the accused knew the way to the key under tbe mat. The idea is robbery was tbe imtive for outrage, as Thomas is known to have been in straitened eiroumstanoes lately. The suit worn by Thomas when - arrested exactly corresponds with the description given by Kirkbride to the police on tbe morning of the outrage. Later.— The man Thomas was remanded. The hammer whioh be left behind was tbe clue that led to hie arrest. But for this there would have been little , chance of finding the perpetrator of the aeeaaJt.
