CESS-PITS ABOLISHED.

The Town Clerk has been instructed to notify burgesses that C6SB-pits will no longer be allowed to be used within the borough. This is only in accordance with the very necessary precautionary measures which are being adopted throughout the Australian colonies and New Zealand in order to ensure as light a dose of cholera as possible, should this fell disease establish itself. How far-reaobing are its effects, and from such unexpected methods of transit, have been made but too clear by cables describing the progress and extent of this disease in Europe, Asia, and now in its initiatory stages in America. The general health of country towns equally with populous cities is too serious a matter to be any loneer trifled with. Therefore the order is imperative. Cesspits in tbe borough shall be abolished. The Inspector of Nuisances has found that there are still 100 cess- pits in use in tbe densest part of the borough of Hawera. This is a standing menace to the health of the town. The notification now being issued by the Borough Council to the ratepayer-* is not required by law, but it is simply done that there shall not be the shadow of excuse for the prompt prosecution of offenders if it is found, after the expiry of seven days from issue of the circular referred to, cesspits aye still found in use within borough boundariep. Following is the principal paragraph of the official intimation issued by the Town Clerk : — " I tiave now to give you notice that unless within seven days you adopt the use of an earth closet to tbe satisfaction ot the Inspector of Nuisances, and unless within the like period you abandon the use of a cess pit and adopt proper measures, to make your premises no longer a source of danger to health, proceedings will be instituted by me againßtyou."
