No damage was done to the veaeel, whioh behaved beantifally throughout. The chief officer states ie was the worst sen be ever experienced on that coast. NAPIEE, June 7. Captain Russell addressed a large meet* ing of his constituents at Hastings. He did not make a strong party speech, devoting himself mainly to the native questioD, land settlement, and pnnoiples which should underlie taxation. He expressed great regret at che repeal of tbe property- tax in favor of the land and income-tax, but he considered all violent changes in the form of taxation liable to disturb confidence in the colony. Bather than risk farther disturbance of confidence, he would retain the present form of taxation, but amend in various directions. He opposed all exemptions. He would like to see greater taxation on all realised wealth, allowing repeal of duties on the necessaries of life, but he opposed speoial taxation of any particular form of wealth. Votes of thanks and confidence were passed unanimously.
