At a public meeting last night a resolution was oarried affirming the desirableness of securing a site nearer town for the annual A. and P. Shows, and bringing under the favorable notioe of the Aesooiation a site offered by Mr. H. D. Crawford at Kilbirnie at a peppercorn rental for 20 years. H.M.S. Tauranga will not visit New Plymouth as the Admiral has recalled her to Sydney to be dooked, and she leaves for that port in a day or two.

This forenoon Commander Pike received instructions to take the Tauranga to New Plymouth, and she will accordingly make a stay of a couple of days there before she goes to Sydney.

ASHBURTON, March 29.

Gilbert, alias Fisher, who escaped from tbe custody of Constable Oberkey on Thursday morning, was captured late last night at a farm camp by Const. Ramsay, who brought the prisoner to AshbnrtoD. This morning ho was charged with forgery and remanded for a week.
