A number of the Fire Brigade team returned to Hawera on Thursday evening, and the others are on their way home. It haß been deoided to found a professorBhip ia the American University at Washington, as a memorial to J. B. Gough, the famous teetotal advocate. Nordenfeldt's brother, Enfilade, was submitted to auction at Melbourne, and at ICDO guineas he beoatne the property of a Mr. Smith, of New South Wales. The Viotorian Government have appointed a lady expert, a Mrs. Kavangb, to give the farmers lectures on fruit culture and canning. Her first lectures have been well attended and apparently much appreciated. At the R.M. Conrt to-day, the only business done was the striking out of a case, 0. E. Bayley v. Dr. Richards, to recover 80a. Plaintiff did not appear, and had not made any arrangements for an argument; therefore, the case was 'struck out, with costs. Mr. Matthews for de« fendant. It is stated that the Duke of Cambridge has written to Captain Oshorne (who wanted to resign his commission owing to the reflections cast upon him by his wife's r.rime in the Spink Pearl Case) to the effect that Her Majesty " could not afford to part with the finest representative of chivalry of the century." The prizes given to Mr. J. Rolfe at the Normanby Show Were as follow :—Mangolds, globe yellow, Ist ; do., long red, Ist ; carrots, intermediate, Ist ; beet, long red, Ist; onions, rope, Ist ; do., pickling, Ist; pumpkins, heaviest, Ist; celery, white, Ist ; peaß, 25 pods, Ist ; parsnios, Ist; preserved fruit, three sorts, highly commended. These were not all included in the official list as published. Owing to the numerous enquiries for young ostriches made to Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Co., we (Auokland Weekly News) learn that the firm intend putting the whole of this season's rearing, numbering "about sixty birds, up to public competition at Wbiteford Park, in about a month. From the suitability oi this province to the rearing of these magnificent and valuable birds, this opportunity should prove an excellent one for establishing a new provincial industry out of the spirited enterprise so well started by Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Co. The Bradford Observer has published some tables, whioh show that the price of Lincoln longwool was lower in 1891 than m any year out of a seriea beginning with 1863. Mr Oliver M. Creagh has, it is reported, just returned from the Ureweya country, where he has been engaged in surveying for the Ngatipe owners a blook of land of 2.0,Q0Q awes, The land in this block he describes as splendid, Mr. Creagb says that all through tbe Urewera country the land is of first rate quality, and that there is far more level land than has been understood. He leaves at once to commence the survey of n block of some hundreds of thousands of acres. Hitherto the Urewera tribe have been always strongly opposed to Bqrveya or sales of land, but Creagh states that there has h,een lately a graat change, and that they ara willing to sell som.6 of their surplus lands. In these ciroamstanees, we may expect to sea tbfs country, whioh has always been so jealously kept closed, in a abort time made available for settlement.
