Beplying to questions as to whether the Government would communicate with the New Zealand Government with a view to effecting a reduction in tbe cable rates, Sir H. Parkes said no reduction could be made unless the colonieß agreed to renew the subsidy, which New Zealand in 1886 refused to do.

A dangerous feeling prevails in Pentridge | Prison owing to the institution of separate cell treatment. Some of tbe prisoners were discovered utilising gas-piping as means of communication, and were overbeard hatching a plot to murder a warder. In consequence of this discovery precautions have been taken 'by tbe gaol officials.
