BUTTER PACKAGES FOR EXPORT.

To the Editor of the Star.

Sir, — It was with pleasure I read the account of sales in the English market of Manaia Dairy Factory butter, packed in my boxes. There were a few circumstances in connection with its packing and sale that I have not the least doubt mu6t have tended to prevent it bringing a higher price than it did, and had these circumstances been noted and remedied at the time, I have no doubt the butter would have brought the highest prices that New Zealand butter has yet reached. The following are the circumstances that must have militated against its sale, viz: lat. When the boxes were packed at the factory, the lids should have been ecrewd on so as they could be easily removed when arrived at its destination. This was not done, as screws were not obtainable either at the factory or the stores at Manaia. Therefore the lids were skew nailed on in such a Manner as to make it impossible to remove them without splitting them to pieces. This would I am sure be objectionable. 2nd From the report of Messrs. Scales and Co., as published in your paper, quantities of butter of from 5 to 20 packages, do not; realise as good a price or command the same attention from buyers as parcels of from 50 to 100 packages. Therefore, if a lower price is given for parcels of from 5 to 20 packages, a still lower price would be given for two boxes only. 3rd. I daresay new packages of butter are looked upon with a certain amount of suspicion until buyers become used to them. It is my intention to start the manufacture of boxes in Hawera for the supply of the district, and when they and their contents are placed upon the market, I have every confidence they wiU give as good returns as other packages. — I ana, &c,

W. S. Brightwell.

[Mr. Brightwell informs us that the above is not intended as a cheap advertiseruent. We hope not, though we doubt, but cive him the benefit of the doubt this time. — Ed. Star.]
