To the Editor of the Star.

Sib, — I see that my name has been placed on the committee appointed to carry out the objects of the resolution which was carried at the annual general meeting of ratepayers held at Manaia on Wednesday. lam neither in favor of the county roads being proclaimed district roads, nor that the Waimate Riding Bbould be declared a separate county. Had I been at the meeting, I should have opposed the resolution. — I am, &c., E. 0. Smith.

FBOST FISH.

To the Editor of the Star.

Sib,— ln Truth of the 15th March, there is^mention of large takes of congereel in the Channel, and the following paragraph appears :—": — " A correspondent sends me an interesting extract from a book of the late Prank Buckland, which contains an explanation of this phenomenon, the explanation being that the frost causes the air in the bladder of the fish to expand, and so brings them to tbe surface." I presume this would also explain the reason of the frost-fish being cast upon tbe shore only in frosty weather. — I am, &c, Hawera. Piscatob.[Authorities on fishes are agreed tbat the frost-fish, which is known in European waters as the sword-fish, is essentially a deep-water fish. It ia believed that, so soon aB it rises within a certain distance of the surface and is relieved from the extreme pressure of the water at great depths, not only its bladder, but all its tissues expand in the same manner as a rabbit does under the air pump. Its muscles are rendered helplesß, and it rises to the surface, where it is tossed about the waves like a cork. In froHty weather, more of the deep waters would rise to tbe surface, being, to a greater extent, displaced by the downflow o£ colder surface water. This would seem to affect the frost-fish either as suggested by Piscator, or in some other way as yet unexplained. — Ed. Star.]
