CHURCH OF ENGLAND.

A special meeting of the parishioners of the Church of England was held in the church, Hawera, on Thursday evening to consider the financial position. Mr. J. Scott was in the chair, and Bey. Mr. Fancourt, Diocesan Secretary, was present. It appeared, from statements made' by Mr. Scott and tbe Diocesan Secretary, that there was owing, in respect of the period ended 31st December last, a sum of about £60, but that if all persons kept their promises and discharged . their liabilities the net deficiency would' be about £27. It was mentioned by thg f Diocesan Secretary that Mr. Boot had left the colony short of a considerable sum' due to him, and that this could not be", sent to him until the Hawera people paid up their assessment, £50 ot the £60 owing by tbe vestry being due on this account. A discussion took place in which there was general- agreement that it was not creditable to the church and district that this sum should remain unpaid, and that it was very desirable ftp; pay off arrears so as to make a fresh stafc^ when the Eev. Mr. Kay took charge..was eventually decided tbat persons in arrears with payments should be appealed to to help the vestry close up the accounts of the past, and that, as to the net deficit of £27 a special canvass be/ made to clear this off. In the meantime three gentlemen present agreed to advance* r , the money, feeling sure that when the, matter was put before the parishioners ', they would at once assist to wipe off tbe" liability. Eev. Mr. Fancourt mentioned' that Eev. Mr. Eay would commence "work in the district at the beginning of ■ March. There was a little discussion as to how the district should be worked in future, butit,. was felt tbat it would be premature to make any changes until the incoming incumbent had had time to look round and visit the people, and see what would be desirable. The diocesan secretary thanked tbe meeting for the spirit in which he had been met, and expressed hope and confidence that there, would be a revival of activity and interest in church affairs in the district.
