CRICKET.

HAWERA v. TARANAKI.

Tho above match was played on Tuesday, duly resulting in a decisive victory for Hawera by an innings and 46 runs. The Taranaki played three substitutes.and it is no doubt owing to that that they were beaten by so many, as two of tbe absentees were their best bowlers. Tbe visitors went to the wickets first, but with tbe exception of Davies, who played a very good innings of 23 not out, could make no stand against the bowling of A. and F. Bayly, and tbe innings closed for fifty-one runs. On Hawera going to tbe wickets, Shove retired first ball, but Burke and A. Bayly got together, and defied tbe bowling until over 70 runs had been registered. A. Bayly was caught for 39, and Burke kept bis wioket up until he had made 50. Both players gave chances, but the performance was a very good one, some of Bnrke's hits being especially good. Wanklyn was the only ore besides who got into double figures. He made 27 and was caught out for the last wicket. The catch was a splendid one, Kivell (a substitute) having to ran a long distance to obtain it. Tbe Taranakis then went to the wicketß but could only get 54 and tbe game reeulted as above. It was a wretched day for crioket, and the game was interrupted several times by the rain. In referring to the High school accounts the Taranaki Newß finds that the cost of edttoating each pupil at this school is £21. 'When we consider that fully one-half of the pupils have not passed a fourth standard examination, the matter assumes a serious aspect. Scholars are tau* ht up to the sixth standard in the ordinary schools at a cost of £8 16s per head, why, then, should there be such a difference in the cost of tuition at the High school ?
