NEWS AND NOTES.

Emmett has been scratched for all engagements at Egmont meeting.

The New Zealand Times says that Major Atkinson has now at his back the largest majority that any Ministry ever had in the colony.

It is rumored in Greymouth that several first sections on the Midland Railway will shortly be let, and the work is to be pushed on with the utmost vigor.

It was remarked as curious that at Saturday's cricket match both Hawera innings were 44 and Manaia's second was also 44.

The Resident Magistrate for this district, Mr. C. A. Wray a telegram informs us, has been transferred to Timaru, to tako up the duties of Mr. Beswick, away on leave. There is a rumor that the transier is likely to be of a permanent character, and it is not improbable that this may prove to be the case. If so, general regret will, we are sure, be felt that the district is to lose the services of Mr. Wray. He has been officially connected with the district for many years in various capacities. In connection with the native and land departments, Mr. Wray has been trusted alike by Government and people, for his advice has been judicious and reliable, and bis administration careful and conciliatory. As Resident Magistrate, he has been painstaking and just. His decisions have been rarely appealed against, and seldom overruled by higher courts. We have no knowledge of what arrangements would follow his retirement from this district. Probably, the Hawera and Patea Court would be put into Mr. Rawson's district. The Patea clerk is dispensed with, and what arrangements are to be made to fill his place have not yet transpired at this end of the district.

We call attention to a sheep fair fixture by Messrs. Nolan, Tonks and Co. for the 20th. The notice would have appeared yesterday but for a misunderstanding in this office.
