MANAIA v. HAWERA.

Tbe second match of the season was played, at Hawera, on Saturday, 28th January, and resulted in favor of Hawera. The batting was wretchedly bad, excepting, perhaps, in tbe cases of Shove, who played a pretty first innings, but went for nothing in the second, and Goodson, who, after getting " set " in the second innings, ran up a score of 23, although he retired for 2 in the first. Goodson picks up all loose balls on the leg better than any man in either team, and Saturday's play was no exception to the rule. With constant practice, he would make a fine bat, but is rather inclined to " slog " rather than play. Burke, Sutherland, and Budge played for a short time in fair form, but with no confidence. For Hawera, A. Bayly was very effective with the ball, taking 11 wickets for 22 runs; G. Bayly coming next with 8 wickets for 26 runs. For Manaia, Hurley took 8 wickets for 21 runs; Bayly, 6 for 32; and Dawson, 5 for 29. Manaia had to obtain two substitutes on the ground. Following are the scores : —
