Lord Brassey on Australian Defences.

«- (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) [Received January 27, midnight.] LONDON, January 25. Lord Braßßey, in delivering an address to thp London and Provincial Chambers of Commerce, said that the colonial defences were skilfully directed, and eulogised the soldierly qualities of Australian troops. He added that Sydney and Melbourne had set a noble example in building graving docks suitable for effecting repairs to vessels of the Imperial navy ; and be insisted on the defence of Albany, Thursday Island, and Port Darwin being effected, and urged tbe chambers to cultivate public opinion in the direction indicated. The Duke of Cambridge, who was present, thoroughly endorsed tbb opinions of Lord Brassey, and Lord Charles Beresford thoroughly agreed with the necessity for defending the stations named. After bearing tbe views Lord Brassey, tbe cb ambers resolved to make increased efforts to defend the ocean routes.
