NEW PLYMOUTH HARBOR.
The following telegrams have passed between Mr. Samuel, M.H.E., and Major Atkinson :—": — " Eeturned last night. Found public meeting called for this eveniog, re barbor. Many reliable persons satisfied sand filling up harbor. Strongly ur»e send best officer to inspect, and. inform Government. May I state 1 have assurance thiß will be done, and you or Marine Minister intend visiting district; and that you are considering Parliamentary Committee's report, and hope to devise means of relief? — Oliver Samuel." " Oliver Samuel, Esq. — Mr. Blackett will be able, in about a week, to visit the breakwater and report upon the question of drift sand. I hope to be able to visit New Plymouth during the summer. I think the Government will be able to submit a reasonable proposal to Parliament, which will obviate the necessity of any further rating. — H. A. Atkinson."
At the meeting held at New Plymouth on Wednesday evening, Messrs. H. R. Bichmond, George, T. Bayly, J. Elliott, Standisb, H. Brown, Wilson Milne, and Breach were appointed a committee to co-operate with' the Harbor Board, and prepare and arrange to get signed a petition to Government from the ratepayers of the New Plymouth harbor rating district, setting iorth the necessity for the interference of the Government in the matter of harbor administration by reason of the inadequacy of funds for defraying the essential expenses of protecting the works and supplying interest on the loan ; such committee to consist of five persons, and to frame a petition stating grounds and praying for assistance in protecting the works, and for relief to the settlers from the harbor rate.
