NAPIER, January 23. A man named Joseph Osborne, engaged on the Harbor Board Works, was drowned this morning by being washed out of a monolith casing as it was being lowered. As Osborne could not swim, and before another workman^ who swam out, could reach him, he sank. The body has not yet been recovered.

WELLINGTON, January 24. The Government have cabled to the Agent-General asking him to use his discretion in making the appointment of Chief Eailway Commissioner.

WELLINGTON, January 25. The libel action, John Martin v. the proprietors of the Evening Post, was heard to-day. The plaintiff was formerly landlord of the City Hotel, and claimed £1000 damages for alleged libel contained in an article published in the Post in November concerning the death of plaintiffs wife, who committed suicide. A verdict was given for the defendants, -with, costs on the higher scale.

AUCKLAND, January 25.

An adjourned meeting ot the shareholders of the Auckland and North Shore Ferry Company resolved to wind. up the company, and offer their boats for sale. H.M.S. Swinger, from New Caledonia, arrived here yesterday.

The Taupiri Extended Coal Company have declared a dividend of Is per share.

CHRISTCHUECH, January 23.

At a special meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club this afternoon, the question of taking over the Grand National Steeplechase Meeting was referred to a general committee, with power to act. The committee was instructed to communicate with other metropolitan clubs with a view to stop the increase of small race meetings. The Lighting Committee of the City Council have been authorised to invite tenders for lighting the city by electricity. It was stated that the committee bad already had an offer which would furnish eight times as much light as the present gas system, at a cost of several hundreds a year less.
