OUR POLICE.
To the Editor of the Star.
Sir, — A few days ago you very properly referred at 6ome length to the ease of cruelty to animals which appeared in court lately and the very slight causa (if any) for fetching such a case into court. Now, sir, I propose to show the pnblio where there has been a great neglect of duty on the part of the police in not taking up a case in which grievous bodily harm was inflicted on a lady. Not only was one lady injured, but both that lady and a neighbouring lady were grossly in* suited. The culprit, a Maori, knew per* fectly well that the first lady's husband was absent. Calling at the second lady'l place, he used bad language because the refused to serve him without the money being tendered, and eventually wound up his career by breaking the lady's arm. Had it not been for the good sense of th« other Maoris present you might have hid to chronicle another Mies Dobie •.flair. The police have been informed of this case, and so far have made no ntir. There seems no reason why the same law should not apply to the native as to a white man. The native who did the deed is welt known, being the son of a chief. The lady whose arm was broken is favourably known to the travelling pnblic. I should strongly recommend this noble Maori to make himself scarce in this district, otherwise he will find himself in trouble and in a fair way to be dnly punished for bis double offence. I crave your insertion of this epistle, purely Pro Bono Pubuco. t November 28th, 1887. l_Tbe sergeant of police at Hawera informs us that he had no knowledge of any such outrage as tbat referred to, and that the lady in question was in Hawera on Saturday and saw the police, but made no complaint, or action would hare been taken.— Ed.
