At a meeting of the Ejjrnont Racing Club committee on Saturday, Mr. It. E. Mcßae was duly elected starter, vice Mr. J. Meikle resigned. There was some doubt this morning as to the number of votes required to be scored by a candidate for the office of mayor. Clause 78 of the Act reads as follows :—": — " Every candidate for the office of mayor shall, at the time of his nomination, deposit .£lO with the returning officer. If any candidate does not doII one-eighth part of the number of votes polled by the successful candidate, such sum shall be forfeited, and the returning officer shall pay it into the borough fund." The Taranaki News says: — " During the approaching summer months great activity will be displayed in the bush districts in the matter of road-making and gravelling.
