WELLINGTON, November 15.
In the Appeal Court, in the case Abbott v. tbe Commissioner of Stampß, it was argued that the appellant claimed that the Stamp Duty on the memorandum of transfer of land should be assessed on tbe value of the land, less encumbrances, and not on tbe value of tbe land as claimed by the commissioner. Tbe appeal was allowed. G. G.Rowlatt, a solicitor practising in Otago, was suspended for two years for irregular practices. The first section of tbe Midland railway from Brannerton to Eokire station near late Brunner, eight miles in length, is ready for traffic and tbe manager has applied to have it formally inspected by the Government.
A boardinghouse keeper named Hall, at Pahiatua, has been reported to tbe police as having attempted to suffocate himself with charcoal flames yesterday. His life is insured for £900.
