CANTERBURY RACES.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

CHRISTCHURCH, November 7.

Tbe following are the acceptances tor for the Canterbury races : — New Zealand Cvp — NeUoc, Artillery, Lochiel, Torrent, Hermitage, Maxim, Sexton, Moana, St. Clair, Gipsy King, Regina, Cruckfield, Beresford. Derby — Gipsy King, Sexton, Maxim, Crackfieid.

[Notes by Trident.] Capital acceptances and entries have been received for the Wanganui Spring Meeting, which takes place on Wednesday next, and given a fine day a good meeting may be anticipated. The weights for the various events seem to have been fairly allotted, so much so that it is difficult to say that one horse has a better show of winning than another. For the Trial Stakes (J-mile), fourteen have accepted, and I prefer the chances of Laurel, The Gem, and Parvenu. There are fonrteen also in the Wangaaui Stakes ; and for this race Administrator if wanted* must be labelled dangerous. Rumour and Rivulet will probably gain situation. Kangaroo ought to win tbe Hurdles, with Germaine, Bluebell, or Waitangi to fill tbe situations. There are eleven Maiden candidates, and of this lot I think Orator, a son of Premier — Gossip, has a good show of winning. There are other well bred youngsters, and also a six-year-old son of Musket — Queen Bess, who has never y«t faced the starter.

The race for tbe New Zealand Cup will be run to-morrow. There are fifteen candidates, and it is voted on all sides to be a very open race. Lochiel (7st 121b) is favorite at present, although old Nelson is running him close for first honors. Artillery, who at one time was said to have a good show, has had to be eased in his work, and this, no doubt, will tend to weaken his chance of winning. I give my vote for Nelson, Lochiel, Hermitage, or Abtilleby. Maxim or Sextant ought to win the Derby. Teddy Yuile has been sold for £200. It is reported that Mr. Drake won £3400 by Pasha's win in the Van Yean Stakes.

Dunlop, Oakleigb, Cardigan, Algerian) and Phaon, winners in Australia recently, are all five-year-olds.
