WELLINGTON, November 7.

Mrs Martin, wife of the landlord of the City Hotel, committed suicide this morning by taking " rough on rats." She had been drinking for some time and had often threatened to end her life by taking poison.

CHRISTCHURCH, November 4.

The entries for the Metropolitan Agricultural Show number 1403, against 1095 of last year. The principal increase is in sheep, which number 266 against 240. Horses amount to 184, cattle 198, implements 317, New Zealand manufactures 111, pigs 44, dairy produce 65, cured aud preserved meats.

GREYMOUTH, November 6.

A Reefton telegram states that while the Lynch Family of Bellringers were crossing the Inangahau river in a coach, the river having risen during the day, the coach and horses were swept down the stream until stopped by a large boulder. The horses were released with difficulty. The Bellringers remained on the top of the coach from midnight until four in the morning, by which time the river had fallen considerably, and assistance was rendered. George Haines, the driver, and one named Wolf acted very pluckily. The party was coming from Charleston to Reefton after a performance.

EGMONT RACING CLUB.

A meeting of the committee of the Eglnont Racing Club was held on Saturday evening.

It was resolved to accept Mr. G. Syme's tender for roofing-in the graodßtand.

It was resolved to accept the offer of Messrs. Adams and Andrews as to the working of the totalisator, the terms offered being regarded as satisfactory. The successful parties hail from Auckland.

A new programme was drawn up for a two days meeting to be held on Wednesday and Thursday, February 22nd and 23rd. Seven races an each day will take place, and stakes amounting to i 728 will be given. The chief events will be Egmont Handicap, £175 ; Waimate Handicap, .£100 ; Steeplechase, £100 ; and Handicap Hurdles, £70.
