A deputation from the Municipal Conference waited on the Premier to lay { before him the resolutions recently passed. k Major Atkinson said he would consult his colleagues on the various proposals submitted ; and, if they arrived at the conclusion that they were important, the Government would introduce measures i during the present session to give effect to them. AUCKLAND, November 4. At' a meeting of the chairmen of the various Boad Boards in the county of J Eden held to-day, it was resolved, That it is inadvisable to bring the Counties Act into operation in Eden. The recent decision of the Charitabcle Aid Board in resolving to invest the principal of the Costly bequeath to the refuges instead of building a new refuge was approved. 5 A unique proposition came before the Waitemate County Council, at its ordinary meeting to-day. The Whangarei County Council telegraphed, asking them to co-operate in endeavoring to secure v from the Government the sum of £50,000 per annum for five years, the money to be distributed pro rata amongst the nine counties north of Auckland. The proposal '- created much amusement, and it was decided to send a copy of the telegram to Mr. Monk, M.H.E. AUCKLAND, November 5. \ At an enquiry into the alleged excessive t and unjust caning of the girl Kate Shearer, r by order of the Rev. Cowes, the head master of the Newton East school, the committee, by four to two, upheld the master's action. \ TAURANGA, November 5. A boat, containing natives, supposed to l have been lost between here and Motoiti, * has turned up safely, having been driven < on to the main land. GREYMOUTH, November 4. It is claimed on behalf of the Education < Board that there are two hundred children 1 in this district under six years of age, 1 which means a loss of £600 a year.
