NEW PLYMOUTH HARBOR RATE.

The decision of Judge Gillies iv respect to the legality of the rate levied by the New Plymouth Harbor Board should satisfy the ratepayers that the* board has simply done its duty in respect to the bond-holders, that it has levied the legal rate, neither more nor less ; as it was> in hosoi bound to do, in order to obtain sufficient funds to pay interest on the harbor loan. We trust that every effort will now be made to get signatures to tha petition asking Parliament to enquire into, and relieve ratepayers from the grievances complained of; the chief of which are that the harbor rate has been levied 20 years before those who bought Waimate Plains lands from the Crown had been led to expect, and that the work itself is of very little direct benefit to ratepayers at this end of the district, although it constitutes a crushing impost at the present time. We sincerely trust there may be no more litigation, which would necessarily involve further waste of ratepayers' money.
