COCKSURE, aged, is a dark bay horse, with good flat bone and immense muscular power. He was bred by Mr. H. Redwood, and is by Towton (imp.), out of Certainty (dam of Dead Shot), by II Barbiere, Chance by Sir Hercules, Finesse. Vide Stud Book.

Cocksube's half brother, Dead Shot, was one of the most successful sires on this coast, being sire of Mata, Pinfire, Chokebore, Shotover, Larry, and several others.

Towton, full brother to the Peer and Marchioness (winner of the Oaks), was a most successful sire, leaving such performers as Tambourini, Lara, Korari, Puriri, Songster, Skylark, and Wai-i-ti (dam of Fusilade), Marchioness is grand dam of Spade Guinea.

Castaway (N.Z.5.8., vol. v., p. 51), by Traducer, out of Mermaid, was n great performer ou the turf himself, and was full brother to those celebrated racehorses Malice, Lurline, Le Loup, and Lure. Castoff's stock are admitted to be the beet hacks in the district, while his sons, Ruapehu and Tongariro, have been very successful on the turf. Tongariro won the Wanganui Derby, beatiDg Forester and British Lion.
