Hawera Borough Council.

The council met on Wednesday evening. Present — Councillors Bobbins, Davidson, Bate, Sutton, Grant, Winks, D. McLean, Spence, and the Mayor.

The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed.

CORRESPONDENCE was read from J. Meikle, re hotel premises.

From W. G. White, secretary to the Hawera Cricket Club, complaining of damage done to the cricket pitch.

REPORT.

The inspector nuisances report was read and approved.

CRICKET GROUND.

It was resolved, on the motion of Councillor Bate, seconded by Councillor Grant, that the clerk be instructed to proceed against any persons injuring that portion of the recreation ground.

MR. MEIKLE'S LEASE.

It wai resolved that Mr. Meikle's application to sublet bis lease to Mr. Howe, of Wanganui, be granted.

ACCOUNTS were passed for payment as follows : — Gunn, £8 Is; A'Court, 12s 6d; Jones, 10s ; Barton, £1 11s 6d.

CONTRACT.

Resolved, that Mr. Thompson be allowed extension of time for completion of his contract.

Councillors Winks, Grant, and McLean were appointed to give the necessary certificate re Thomson's contract.

BALANCE SHEET.

The half-yearly balance sheet was read and adopted.

BEACH ROAD.

On the motion of Councillor Sutton, seconded by Councillor Davidson, it was resolved that the mayor wait upon the Chairman of the Road Board, and discuss with him the advisability of making a track to the beach, and also obtain an estimate of the cost.

WATER SUPPLY.

On the motion of Councillor Bate, seconded by Councillor McLean, it was resolved to write to the Government, asking them to supply a diamond drill or boring machine in order to test the district for artesian water.

NEW WORKS.

On the motion of Councillor MoLean, seconded by Councillor Grant, it was resolved to fill in and gravel the cutting on the east side of the brewery, and also to gravel the foot-path to the cemetery.

REPAIRS TO BOROUGH CHAMBER.

A discussion arose as to whether it was advisable to remove the gallery in the Council Chambers. It was finally resolved not to interfere with it.

The council went into committee to open and consider tenders, and on resuming agreed to accept Mr. G. Symes'g tender subject to making arrangements r* tbe non-removal of the gallery.
