PARLIAMENT
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
Thursday, November 3 petitions.
Several petitions in favor of Bible reading in State schools were presented from Oamaru and Gisborne by Messrs. Menzies and Williams.
COLONEL NOAXE'S PAMPHLET.
Mr. Brett asked the Attorney-General what steps the Government have taken or intend to take in respect of Col. Noake's pamphlet ?
The Attorney-General, in replying, said the mattter referred to had not been brought officially under the attention of the Minister of Defence. The only thing the Government knew of the pamphlet was by the newspaper reports. He regretted he could afford no definite information to the hon. member on the subject.
RETURN WANTE».
Mr. Waterhouse moved that a retnrn be laid on the table of tbe names of all persons who, since the passing of the Civil Service Reform Act, have been temporarily appointed to tbe public service, together with a statement of the office filled and of the salary. In bringing forward the motion, he could not refrain from Bnying that the working of the present Act was little better than a farce, and, if the "temporary appointments" were allowed to be made, the efforts and intentions of the Legislature would be nullified. The motion was agreed to.
