TORPEDOES AND MINES.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

WELLINGTON, October 15.

A parly of visitors, accompanied by Lady Wbitmore, and Col. Baillie, Captain Messenger, and other military gentlemen, went down the harbor to Fort Ballance yesterday afternoon to witness some experiment b with the, torpedoes and mines. Two "Wbitebead torpedoes were fired between: buoys representing tbe line of advance of a supposed enemy. ' The direction was<- accurate, but one on the missiles proved recalcitrant, and' eluded search for 1 a long time. The other floated up at once, and was easily regained. On reaching the surface tbe composition of phosphorous on the snout bursts into a flame and guides the pursuers. Atter tbat four mines were' laid, and fired with complete success, not a hitch occur* ring. The visitors inspected the fort, which is now finished. There is nothing remaining but to clear some earth outside the palisade. It is armed with two inch muzzle loaders, and a six-inch breach loading Armstrong, mounted on a disappearing carriage and two sixpounder, quick • firing- Nordenfeldts . Everything is in readiness to go into action tomorrow, if necessary. Work on Fort Hals well, near the town, is not as advanced. An eight-inch Armstrong has been mounted there in addition to tbe other guns. There is also a powerful search light ot Fort Ballance, and nil the stores and electric apparatus necessary for the system of floating and contact mines. The submarine armament of the colony has, so far, cost about £20,000.

The New Plymouth train on Saturday,

which was due in Hawera at 7.35, was delayed nntil a few minutes after nine o'clock. The cause of the delay was a breakdown of the engine near Eltham, ona of the tubes having burst. The train

going, from Hawera, North was de-

layed at Eltham until the engine of the. \ynngauui train went on to take the place pf tbe disabled locomotive and the consequence was that passengers to Hawera were -delayed until after 9, passengers going to New Plymouth did opt reach there nntil about midnight. Complaints are made that a spare engine from New Plymouth was not despatched so soon as the breakdown become known there. :
