♦ At tbe meeting held in Patea on Friday, under the auspices of tbe Hawera A. and P. Association, to. consider the proposals to start a meat tinning works on a site to be fixed between Stratford and Patea,- 6n a guaranteed bonus of £1500, : payment extending over two years, there was comparatively only a small attendance. Tbe meeting supported the movement, and £150 was collected in the room, the chairman, Mr. Lysaght, consented to give. .£SO wherever the works are situated, iv addition to the £150 promised by settlers. Our correspondent at Patea reports : — In the course of his remarks, Mr. Oldbam said he had. attended a similar meeting at Hawera, when there was a great fight about the ' pite, but it was impossible for him to* decide that question at present, as there were so many things to consider, and so many places bad been pointed out to him. He had seen a site at Mokoia, whiob was suitable in very many ways, but -the: annual- haulage from, there wpuldr.be about a thousand pounds per annunf and must kill the concern. Another at Kakaramea was good, but there was; no way of getting rid of the tailings, he bad seen' one at Hukatere, and thought he' had found tbe right place; but on looking 1 into" it 'found it would be impossible to get a railway siding into it so that would not do. He had heard of other sites, but not having seen them could not give a but be could not go very far away .from the port of shipment as alt the costs, what ever they were, must come out of the growers pockets in the end. It was necessary ito have a good supply of mooing water as the great secret was cleanliness* ; .
