STRATFORD & NGAIRE.

(r-ItOM A. CORREBPONDEKT)

A nasty acoidout happened a few days ago to W. Urry, Messrs. Curtis* wellknown packer. He was driving a trap loaded with stores, when the horse shied just as it was going on to the Stratford bridge, overturning the trap, severely bruising Urry, and pitching some of tbe goodg down iuto the river. Dr. Logic had to be called iv to treat the sufferer ; and members of the local lodge of Foresters are now engaged in impressing upon all aud sundry how desirable it is that they Rhould join some benefit society, so that they may receive sick pay and free medical attendance in case of any similar, emergency.

The Stratford Dramatic Society give another entertainment on Friday evening, September 2nd, in aid of the school prize tund. The local amateurs play " Trying it on," whilst the Ngaire Dramatic Company kindly assist with "The Area Belle." There is, ot course, to be a concert and dance to wind up will., and there should be a large house to welcome the combined troupes, especially for such an object as the one in question.

The railway authorities are setting ready to replace that absurd and dangerous viaduct near Ngaire by a large concrete culvert. It is not always easy tor an outsider to judge of the merits oi such questions, but it is not at all clear why a viaduct was ever pat there ut all, and in any case there would not seem to be any justification for patting a carve in it. However, it is not much use crying over spilt milk, and everyone will feel more comfortable, I think, when the timber structure is replaced by a filling of earth.

After service at Ngaire on Sunday, Rev. Mr. Boot invited the parishioners to stay aud discuss church matters, your vestry apparently considering that the bash districts were not doing their fall share. I have not heard the result j but it would be a x*xy great pity if the " bard times " should cause the district to lose the services of one so deservedly liked and respected as your Anglican minister.

A friend from the Cardiff district — that quiet little corner of the world — tells me that the Salvation Army have " opened fire " there, and that they intend to hold service regularly in the schoolroom in future. The Ngaire brethren have hitherto been the only ones to, minister to the spiritual wants of the residents, of whom there are a good number. The school committee, he says, make a charge for the use of tiie room, and have been waxing so wealthy that they have been enabled, by the help of the board, to invite tenders for felling the whole of the remaining bush on the school site, which is about ten aorea in extent, and which will wake a capital paddock for children's horses, etc.
