Mary Ann Davis was proceeded auninst by John Fin lay Martin for having failed to register the birth of a child. The circumstances were that some time a-jo Annie Hook Lloyd was lolivf-red of a child in Hawera. It had Dever been registered, and as the mother had left the district, defendant, who was prtsenl at the birth, was proceeded against, any person present being liable if registration does uot take place. Defendant pleaded guilty, but Mr. Matthews, on her behalf, explained the circumstances, and asked for a nominal fine. Fined Is and costs.

DRUNKENNESS.

Mary Minbiooick, a naiive girl of about 18, was fined 5s and costs for this offence.

CIVIL BUSINESS.

R. Dingle v. P. Murpby. — Claim for .£2l 78 6d. This was an action arising out of tbe hire of bullocks irom plaintiff by defendant, and plaintiff claimed £1 7s 6d for hire of two bullocks, £7 10s each in default of their return, and £5 by way of special damage for detention. — The case occupied the attention of the court for some time, and eventually the Bench gave judgment for plaintiff for £1 7s 6d for hire, and ordered the return of one bullock or payment of £7 10s. One bullock had died, and it was not proved to the satisfaction of tbe court that its death was due to the negligence of defendant, and therefore no order was made respect' ing it. The claim for detention was not

allowed. Judgment for £8 178 61, with costs £8 6s.— Mr. Caplen for plaintiff; Mr. Barton for defendant.

Redding v. Sl attery.— Claim for j?10 for hire of horse. The hiring was not disputed, but there was disagre-uieot as to the amount due, and, in court, the parties compromised. .£6 beiDg taken in satisfaction of the claim. — Mr. Matthews for plaintiff.
