AUCKLAND, July 27.

At the District Court, J. \y. 1 hompson claimed £100 damages for false imprisonment. He had been charged at the Police Court with stealing lOlbs of tea from Mrs Thomas, and the case was dismissed. Judgment went for Thompson for £25. The Government have instructed Dr. Macgregor, inspector of hospitals and asylums, to make an inquiry into tbe administration of charitable aid in Auckland. A deputation from the Seamen's Union waited on Sir R. Sto tit, and urged tbe necessity of imposing a tonnage tax on foreign owned vessels engaging in local trade, <iud passing tbe Seamen's Representation Bill. The Premier concurred in the necessity for the latter, and promised to consider the former. A deputation frotn tbe Industrial Association urged the desirability of farther protecting lppal industries. Sir- R. Stoat said the Government bad tbis matter at heart, but it lay in the people's own hands. If they wanted protection, (bey should return members pledged to. support the Government. " -
