OPUNAKE.
... (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONrt-.XT.) Mr. E. Bayley has. been in .uil swing at the factory, butter-making, dnriog tbe month, having as manager Mr. S. Morris, who had charge of .the Inglewood factory during the summer months, and who conies with an excellent name as a buttermaker ; the milk produced in the district being of tbe best quality, tbe article now turned out is, no doubt, of the beet quality, aud should command a ready sale, as is tbe case. Mr. Bayley has; during the last week, extended his operations, and is now -purchasing milk from "some of the Otakeho farmers, the milk being .carried by them to Oeo, at which phiee it is transferred into Mr. Bayley's conveyance and brought on to Opnnake. The days being cool, there is little or no danger of injuring the milk by being longer on the road' than during the summer months, and delivery is made at the factory fully an hour after the tune fixed for the hotter months, which is a great consideration to dairymen. Last season the factory closed on the 22nd May with a supply of about 190 gallons. With a butter plant tbe concern oould have been kept going all the year round, even with a smaller supply, as will be the case this year, although the supply will be more than could have been last year. / t ? Mr. Breach is also milking ii large number of cows, and is separating the milk of another farmer as well as bis own. ' ""•' With a fair demand for dairy produce next spring, such a supply of milk should come forward aa will keep the r local factories \a full working, which.jroold considerably improve farmers prospects which this year have not been. quite so bright as anticipated at the beginning of spring. ' .l. l The south-easter of last week ' Was by far the strongest from; that quarter experienced here for some years pastUVery few trees, plants, or shrubs, exposed to the full force of the gale bnt have t>een blighted withered on tbe windward side, the grass too was much blighted, and afterwards presented the apgearance of having been slightly scorched by fire and even now it has not recovered rtsLformer freshness. Two shrdbs premineotly appear to have stood the blaitibg effects of thVwind. ,'"* V 'The Taupata which grows ia many places' on the cliff, and can .be oultivate* from outtinf 8, and the OieaVia which also grows readily from eattingvybesides the qualities mentioned they possess beautiful foliage, the former dV bright dark green, and the latter of a light green with a whitish under leaf. ;/ * A few days ago it will doubtless be remembered that a letter from Mr. Mann, of this town, appeared in'the^TAß, advocating the planting of a belt or; belts of trees in commemoration; of thf Jubilee year. It is now understood ttfai Mr. Mann is willing to contribute towards that object both in money And a few score .'of trees and shrubs, and besides send assistance to plant trees in position. There is no doubt tha^ the idea- is a really good one. The town' sadly needs shelter from tbe bad* winds, anil such a scheme energetically oa'rried 1 out' would improve the appearance of ill* town also. Not far from the centre of the town to the west of tbe business and more 1 populated portion is situate the Opunake Public Domain. A Btrip of that reserve could be planted, and eventually tbe belt would assist to shelter the town from the prevailing "westerly winds. Other parti of the town might also be planted at no' great expense if properly gone into, as doubtless there an few residents but would assist in such an object, Mr. E. J, Allen's friends will, no doubt be pleased to hear that be hu been appointed to Waipawa, HawkeV' Bay, having the supervision also of the Waipukurau agenoy. Such promotion speak* for itself, and does not require any comment, except that Mr. Allen well deserves the advancement) and he is to be congratulated upon his good fortune. u< " * - May,29. , ...
