(PUBLISHED DAILY.)
SATURDAY, MAY 28, 1887. DEFEAT OF THE GOVERNMENT. The news of the defeat of the Government reached us at 10.15 a in. It would cause little surprise to those who had followed the debute, or who had noticed the general dissatisfaction expressed throughout the colony with the financial proposals of the Government. It is clear that Major Atkinson hit the right nail on the head when he boldly advocated retrenchment, rather than increased taxation. In his presessional speech at Hawera, he clearly stated his intention to insist on every possible retrenchment being made before further taxation were imposed ; and he has shown that he not only had the will but also the power to parry out his iutentions as then expressed. A majority of four on a no confidence motion is a substantial one, and is larger than many oi his political supporters counted upon.
